Last month, HomeSafe’s SafetyNet domestic violence program celebrated International Women’s Month with an event called “Women in Motion… with Humor.” Each year, Marlene Rivera, the program’s victim advocate for 28 years, organizes a special event to honor the women who are currently in the program and those who have graduated and are thriving.
The Saturday celebration featured a variety of fun activities and lots of laughter. A beautiful dance was performed by one of the program’s current members, Michelle, to remind the women to celebrate life and the strength and determination they have to overcome the difficulties and pain they have faced.
The ladies performed several skits illustrating the various extra jobs they have taken on just to get by, including house and hotel cleaning, babysitting, waitressing, construction work, and painting. Women, especially those working to move past the trauma of domestic violence, wear many hats every day, and they do so with great pride.
Even though the responsibilities they shoulder are endless, nothing breaks their resolve to provide for their children and continue their forward momentum. Fortunately, many SafetyNet clients succeed, building confidence and resilience through therapy and leaving behind partners who hurt them physically, mentally, and emotionally — but failed to crush their hope.
We are grateful to El Bodegon Supermarket, Vicky’s Bakery, and to two SafetyNet graduates who offered their time and talent to decorate and beautifully display the donated food.
Since 1998, the SafetyNet program has provided prevention and intervention services for survivors of domestic violence and their children. All services are free and offered in English and Spanish. If you or someone you know needs help, please call 561-383-9840.
